For a short month, February sure is dragging. It might have to do with how busy we all are -- work, travel, school, taxi services, driver's ed, color guard practice, band rehersal -- but I think it's because I can't wait to see everyone coming down for Tom's birthday bash. Fast or slow, February 29th will get here and I'd better get the office cleaned out or Sue and AJ will have nowhere to sleep.
Here's hoping illness doesn't mess things up. Thing One had a temperature of 103.7 F this morning. No strep (my worry), but it's probably the 'flu. So far, Thing Two and Thing Czech are fine; cross your fingers they stay healthy. I've already threatened them with bodily harm if they dare catch the 'flu. Happily, Tom never gets sick. I'm chewing on vit. C tablets like they're M&Ms (too bad they don't taste like M&Ms).
Speaking of Thing One, Ian turned eighteen on the tenth. If you haven't seen the pictures yet, take a look: www.periodic-tabloid.com/photos/thumbnails.php. Here's one picture to get you started:

I'll see some of you in a week or so. And everyone -- don't get the 'flu!

As some of you know, my company Capital One is merging North Fork Bank (based on Long Island) into what was Hibernia Bank, which was headquartered in New Orleans. As a result, I’ve been traveling to New Orleans for a few days every other week since about June. I was able to line up the most recent trip so that I got to experience Mardi Gras in the Big Easy. Don’t worry, I didn’t get in to any trouble that a liver transplant, a decent lawyer, and a good dry cleaner can’t correct! Actually, I took it pretty easy, spending a lot of time with one of my colleagues, his wife, and their 3-year-old son.
Some highlights:
- Monday night, watched parades from 2nd story balcony of Place St. Charles, a high-rise office building that sports the company logo. Nice, but Corporate Security Goons prevented any real fun breaking out.
- Caught a few songs from a decent blues band to close out Mon night.
- On Tuesday, had to work till about noon (ugh!) then hit the streets.
- Caught Zulu and Rex parades while walking about 2 miles on St. Charles St.
- Spent Tues afternoon at St. Charles and Jackson watching the end of the Rex and Elks parades right up close and personal.
- Tuesday night on Bourbon Street with some other friends
- Observed ancient ritual exchange of beads and breast shots
- Bypassed occasional clusters of folks handing out religious tracts.
- Went to public webcam, and phoned home to let Jean and Ian witness me on the scene from afar.
- Made it to work on time on Weds morning, though maybe just a little more bleary-eyed than normal for that point in a week of late nights on a long project.
All in all, it was a good time and a nice break from the norm, but would have been better still with Jean and a little more time to devote to recreational pursuits. Maybe some other year….

I'm tired of hand-coding changes for The Periodic Tabloid (as you can tell by the appalling lack of updates in the past, er, years). Our hosting service now offers a free blog feature, and I'm jumping on it. Now Tom (or any of us) can type up his own content, push a button, and -- done!
So, bookmark this page, visit it often, and you'll get to read Tom's pithy updates, Jean's occasional hellos and typos, and if we poke the kids hard enough, maybe they'll contribute once in a blue moon, too.
Be good --
Jean
